SCN is operational
Stellenbosch Community Network has opened the first AP for public use! It is on the Helshoogte Hostel ( have a look at the map if you don't know where it is). It operates on the 2.4GHz frequency and if you have LOS to Helshoogte you should, with the right equipment be able to connect. Services include WebCT, Webmail and Internet access via Sinetkey.
The AP is owned and managed by the university and we therefore cannot help with any problems. If you have queries you can go to www.scn.za.net.
Where does this leave Stbwug? As some of you might think, this does not leave Stbwug without any purpose. We are still working on establishing a network across Stellenbosch. We are currently in discussions for 2 possible highsites and are waiting for a response. These AP's will run on 5.8GHz band which has less noise. They will also possibly give greater coverage. These are intended mostly for backbone and long distance links and we plan to have 2.4GHz nodes spread across Stellenbosch for users to connect to.
