StbWUG is Alive!

Reporting back from the first WUGMeet!

Coffee... and beer (!) was consumed, and many ideas and visions exchanged. We also set some preliminary goals, and gathered consensus on the feelings surrounding, goals and usefulness of a WUG. Among the attendees were, unfortunately, no representatives from other WUG's, nor from WAPA. One local service provider was represented.

We have tentatively decided to let the WUG install a network that runs loosely between the first members, in order to trial different services and technologies. Each member will contribute equally toward high-site equipment, and anybody is free to connect with- and donate whatever hardware they can find.

We more-or-less have general consensus that the WUG's potential should not be restricted by an anti-commercial attitude, and that instead, a network that is reliable, with a good and proven track record, should eventually be established, capable of offering reliable interconnection to commercial and government ventures, while reserving a substantial portion of it's capacity for free use by enthusiasts and the public. The reasoning behind this is twofold and simple:

1) The more people on- and the bigger the coverage area of the WUG's network(s), the more useful it will be.
2) The more reliable the network is, the more useful it will be.

As we grow, policies will be developed regarding interconnection from businesses and service providers in a mutually beneficial way. Revenues generated will go towards maintenance, marketing and administration of the WUG, in an obvious and transparent way.

Simply put, we would like to build a useful network, worthy of funding, and have fun along the way. We will be sure to keep the vision of free local access, with an eye on the future, central to decisions regarding the WUG.

Well said...

I think we should start with a type of mission statement... Something when in times where we don't know how to handle handle a specific problem we can go look back to and find our roots. It should be the heart and soul of the WUG.

Here's some things I thought about:

The WUG will always be free for public, non-commercial use.
The WUG will always prioritize the interest of it's users, potential users and the general public (in that specific order). Be it in gathering and managing funds, shaping traffic or installing high sites.
The WUG will strive to be useful. This may seem like a trivial point to make, but we agreed that we want to work on making the WUG useful not just for techies and wifi enthusiasts, but ultimately for the average person on the street.

I also found this http://www.freenetworks.org/peering.html It's a type of legal agreement for peering of free networks. I thought it could very well be adapted for our needs. Let me know what you guys think.
